Personal Property Insurance FAQs

What does my residence Liability cover?

This helps protect you for property damage or bodily injury to others on your premises. Coverage may extend beyond your residence to other parts of the world.

How long does a claim stay on my policy?

A claim on your Property policy will usually stay for a minimum of 3 years.

I will be leaving for vacation. Will this affect my insurance?

This is particularly important in the winter months or normal heating season. Please contact us for additional information for Insurance company requirements for your period of absence.

My house is vacant. Do I have coverage?

Coverage for a vacant dwelling is very limited. Please contact us to discuss.

I am now renting my house to someone else. Do I need to let you know?

Yes. This is extremely important, as the insurance company needs to be advised. Please contact our office.

I am renting a property. Do I need my own insurance or am I covered under my landlord?

When you are renting, you need to insure your own contents, but do not need to insure the building. Please contact our office and we can help arrange to protect your belongings.

Is my vehicle/atv/sled/trailer covered under my home policy if the garage/shed burns down with them in it?

No. All automobiles are required to be insured under an Automobile Policy.

Do I need a pink card for my holiday/utility/stock trailer?

No. The liability that is required extends from the vehicle that is towing the trailer. A pink card is not required for the trailer, however if you require any Physical coverage for the trailer, this can be added separately. Please call us for further information how to do this.

Is flood covered? Can I purchase coverage for it?

Some insurance companies have developed coverage for Overland Water and Ground Water.

If my vehicle is broken into and my CD’s/sunglasses/wallet/ipod/etc are stolen, why is it a property claim?

An automobile policy only insures the vehicle, therefore any losses to Personal Property contents would need to be claimed wherever your property is insured.

If water seeps into my house, is it covered?

No. Seepage of water is not covered under a Standard House insurance policy.  Some companies may be able to add Ground Water coverage.

If I am moving, are my contents covered while in storage/in transit?

Coverage is available, however most companies will have limitations. Please contact us to confirm the coverage you have in place.

If a tree from my property falls on my neighbor’s house, does my policy respond or does his?

Generally, your own policy will respond for damages to your  property.  Not every claim may be adjusted this way however, depending if there was any fault or negligence from another party.  As with any claim, many factors can influence the outcome.

Is mold covered on my property insurance?

No. Mold is not covered.

What does Sewer Back-Up cover?

If purchased, this covers loss or damage to dwelling and contents from the Backing-Up or escape of water from a sewer, sump or septic tank. Limits and conditions will apply. Please contact us to confirm the coverage you have.

Is a roof of a house or outbuilding covered if it collapses due to snow load?

Coverage varies by company and by policy type. Please contact us to confirm the coverage you have.

Are my son/daughter’s belongings covered while away at school?

Most policies will provide some coverage, with limitations. Please contact us to determine the amount of coverage you have.

Are Tornado's covered?

Generally speaking, yes Tornado’s would be covered as this is considered the Peril of Wind, which is already covered. Some exceptions apply to “open ended” buildings, however please contact our office to discuss.

Personal Auto Insurance FAQs

What is Liability coverage (Commonly referred to as PL/PD)?

Liability protects you for property damage or bodily injury to others that you may be held legally responsible for. The amount and limitations will vary depending on the outcome of a claim. Please refer to the S.P.F. No 1, as this outlines the coverage for all Alberta Insurers.

What is Collision coverage?

Coverage is for damage to your vehicle, caused by collision with another object or by upset.

What is Comprehensive coverage?

Coverage is for any damages, other than Collision or upset.

What is Specified Perils coverage?

Coverage is for very specific perils, which are listed in the SPF No.1. Please contact us for any questions or additional information.

Is my vehicle/ATV/sled/trailer covered under my home policy if the garage/shed burns down with them in it?

No. All automobiles are required to be insured under an Automobile Policy.

If my child is licensed, can they drive my vehicle if they’re under 25 yrs?

Generally speaking, If your child resides at home in your care, they would be covered. Your child or any occasional drivers of your vehicles need to be listed on the policy. Please contact us to ensure the proper people are insured. Keep in mind, any claims that occur while someone else is driving YOUR vehicle will still fall on your insurance.

Do driving convictions affect my insurance? For how long?

Convictions can affect your insurance, and will generally be a factor for 3 Years. Please contact us if you have questions on your situation.

I’ve moved to Alberta from another province. What will you require?

To best prepare yourself, please ask your existing Insurance company for a Claims Experience Letter, and get a copy of your driver abstract

Where in the world does my Auto Insurance apply?

Coverage is only provided for Canada and the United States of America or upon a vessel plying between ports of these countries.

How long do I have to substitute vehicles and what coverage does the new one have?

Insurance only provides 14 days of coverage for any Newly Acquired private passenger vehicle, and only the lowest “common” coverage to all vehicles on the policy. Make sure to give us a call before you assume that certain coverage is in place.

Can my unlicensed/underage child drive my ATV/sled?

Many insurance companies will limit or exclude the coverage for underage drivers of recreational vehicles. Please be sure to contact us before you assume coverage is in place.

Do I need a pink card for my holiday/utility/stock trailer?

An auto claim can apply for up to 6 years.

What is Limited Glass coverage (SEF 13D)?

To help reduce premiums, this endorsement will limit the amount of glass coverage. Typically the windshield will have very limited coverage, and common damage from rocks, chips or passing vehicles will not be covered. Additional coverage can be added or purchased for an additional premium. Please contact our office to discuss.

What is Family Protection coverage (SEF No. 44)?

This is extremely important coverage. This provides coverage towards a shortfall in coverage if you are in an accident with an UNINSURED or UNDER INSURED motorist. Limits, definitions and coverage vary. Please contact our office if you have any questions.

If my friend drives my vehicle and has an accident, will his insurance policy pay for everything?

No. As YOUR vehicle is the item carrying insurance, the claim will be on your policy. When you lend your vehicle, you are also lending your insurance.

Do I have coverage for a rental vehicle if my vehicle is being repaired? (SEF No. 20 Endorsement)

Some policies may automatically include coverage or it can usually be purchased for an additional premium. This will commonly be listed on an auto policy as the Loss of Use endorsement (SEF No. 20), and will have a specific limit. Please contact us to confirm the coverage and limits you have.

What is “Parked/Seasonal” Coverage?

Commonly referred to as Parked coverage, this is when an automobile has all coverage removed except Comprehensive or Specified Perils coverage with Limited Glass (SEF No 13D). Usually placed on vehicles when they are not being driven for an extended period of time.

Commercial Liability / Property FAQs

Why do you need to know my company financial information?

This an essential factor when rating a Commercial policy. The more work you perform, the greater the exposure or chance of a loss occurring. In addition, some policies insure against the loss of Business Income, and therefore this information would be required.

Will commercial insurance provide me coverage for Income that I lose while suffering a loss?

Not all policies provide this coverage automatically, however it can usually be added for an additional premium. This is very important coverage to have, which can sometimes be the main factor for a business to withstand a major loss. Please contact our office to discuss if this coverage is available for you.

Commercial Auto Insurance FAQs

Why is radius important?

This is an important factor for a Commercial automobile. Where the vehicle is normally driven and the type of operations will help determine the proper rating for the policy.

Are tools covered in my truck?

No. Contents of a commercial vehicle are covered under a Commercial Property policy.

Can I use my commercial vehicle for personal use?

Yes.

What changes do I need to let you know of?

Advising us of changes is very important. Your policy covers you for the type of Operations you declared at the time of application. Notify us immediately If you have a Material Change in risk, or a change that would have a bearing on the object of insurance.

Farm Insurance FAQs

Do Outbuildings cover contents automatically like under the homeowner coverage?

Coverage is not automatic. You must request the limit you wish to insure. Please contact us to ensure you have proper coverage.

Are Tornado’s covered?

Is my farm equipment covered by the outbuilding if there is a fire to the building?

Equipment such as machinery and Farm contents such as tools, tack, etc must be listed or have an insured limit on the policy in order to be covered.

Is my farm equipment covered for maintenance issues?

Property insurance does not cover maintenance, deterioration or wear and tear. The coverage is for losses that are Sudden and Accidental for the those Perils insured on the policy.

Do I have coverage for livestock?

Livestock coverage is not automatic, however it can be added. There are different coverage options and premiums charged. Please contact our office to discuss.

Do I have coverage for Hail on my crops?

Hail insurance for crops is not automatically covered, however can be purchased separately. Please contact our office to discuss the coverage you require.

Property Claims FAQs

Our property has experienced damage. What am I covered for?

Each claim is different and needs to be handled by an adjuster. Please contact our office if you have experienced any damage to your property, and we would be happy to discuss.

How is my policy affected if I have a claim on my property?

  • Claims will generally stay on your policy for 5 years, however most companies will offer a discount once you have been Claims-Free for 3 years.
  • The increase to premiums will vary by company, and can include loss of discounts, surcharges or loss of certain coverage. Please contact us for further information.

Auto Claims FAQs

I have never had a claim, yet my premiums have gone up. Why do I have to pay for the losses of everyone else?

  • This is in fact, the basic concept of insurance. The losses of the few are paid among the many policy holders.
  • Many factors effect premiums in addition to costs associated with claims. These can also include, but are not limited to: Inflation, labor costs, government regulation, etc.
  • Most Insurance companies will provide a discount in premiums to recognize those with no recent claims.

What type of claim will impact my insurance, and by how much?

Any claim where you are found to be at fault for property damages or bodily injury to another party or a Collision claim will impact your insurance.

I don’t carry Collision, and I was involved in an accident. What am I covered for?

  • If you are found to be at fault for the accident, your policy may need to respond and pay for damages to another party. This would fall upon your Liability Coverage. Damages to your own vehicle will not be covered.
  • If the other party is found to be at fault, you will need to be in contact with the other party’s insurance company for any damages to your vehicle.

I haven’t heard from my Claims adjuster, what should I do?

One of our main goals is to have our clients connected with their adjuster, as the adjuster will walk you through the entire claim. If you feel too much time has passed, please contact our office.
